TL;DR: The PhonePe SBI SELECT Black Credit Card is still one of the strongest cashback-style cards for people who spend heavily on PhonePe, online shopping, and UPI. The big catch is the current First Year Free offer: if your joining fee is waived, SBI’s offer T&C says you will not get the ₹1,500 welcome PhonePe gift card.
I applied for the PhonePe SBI SELECT Black Credit Card through the SBI Sprint flow, completed online KYC, got a decent limit, and received the card a few days later.
The application experience was smoother than I expected.

But the card itself needs a proper explanation because the headline numbers can confuse people.
Yes, it gives up to 10% reward points on PhonePe spends. Yes, it gives 5% on online spends. Yes, 1 reward point is worth ₹1. But the caps, categories, convenience fees, and joining-fee offer change the real value.
Important: This is my personal credit card experience, not financial advice. Credit cards only make sense if you pay the full bill on time. If you revolve credit, the interest cost will easily destroy any cashback benefit.
What is the PhonePe SBI SELECT Black Credit Card?
Short answer: it is the premium PhonePe-SBI co-branded credit card built for PhonePe, online, UPI, and everyday digital spends.
SBI Card and PhonePe launched two co-branded cards: PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE and PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK. Both are available on RuPay and Visa networks, depending on eligibility and offer availability.
The SELECT Black is the higher variant.
The official PhonePe card page lists these headline benefits for SELECT Black:
- 10% reward points on eligible PhonePe spends
- 5% reward points on eligible online spends across 1000+ brands
- 1% reward points on other spends, including Scan & Pay and Tap & Pay
- 4 domestic lounge visits per year, capped at 1 per quarter
- 2-year complimentary Priority Pass membership
- ₹5,000 travel voucher on ₹5 lakh annual spends
- 1 reward point = ₹1, redeemable as statement credit or vouchers
On paper, this is a very strong rewards structure for a card with a ₹1,499 annual fee.
The real question is whether your spending pattern fits the caps.
How I got the PhonePe SBI SELECT Black card
Short answer: I applied through the SBI Sprint flow, completed online KYC, and received the card within a few days after approval.
The process was simple in my case:
- I opened the offer/application flow from PhonePe/SBI Sprint.
- I entered my details and completed the online KYC process.
- SBI approved the application and assigned a decent credit limit.
- The physical card reached my address after a few days.
My credit score was already good, so the KYC and approval flow did not create much friction.
That said, SBI and PhonePe can open or close card availability in batches. If you do not see the offer inside PhonePe, it may simply not be available for your profile at that time.
If you are trying to improve credit card eligibility generally, my posts on how I increased my HDFC credit card limit and how I got an Amex limit increase may also help you understand what banks usually look at.
PhonePe SBI SELECT Black fees and current First Year Free offer
Short answer: normal fee is ₹1,499 + taxes, but there is a First Year Free offer running from April 3, 2026 to June 2, 2026.
| Item | SELECT Black detail | My take |
|---|---|---|
| Joining / annual fee | ₹1,499 + applicable taxes | Reasonable if you can use the reward caps. |
| Current First Year Free offer | Fee waived for eligible new applications from April 3, 2026 to June 2, 2026 | Very useful, but read the welcome-benefit catch. |
| Welcome benefit | ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card after joining fee payment | Not available if your card is issued under the FYF offer. |
| Renewal fee | ₹1,499 + taxes from second year onwards | Can be reversed on ₹3 lakh previous-year retail spends. |
| Fee waiver | ₹3 lakh annual retail spends | Good threshold if this becomes your regular UPI/online card. |
The current SBI First Year Free offer T&C is important here.
It says the FYF offer is valid for new applications received from April 3, 2026 to June 2, 2026, and the first-year fee is waived. But it also says the ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card welcome benefit for SELECT Black will not be available for eligible cards issued under this offer.
So do not count both benefits together.
The honest catch: If you get the card First Year Free, you save the joining fee, but you should not expect the ₹1,500 welcome voucher under the current FYF terms.
PhonePe SBI SELECT Black reward structure
Short answer: the reward structure is strong, but the monthly caps decide the real value.

Here is the practical reward breakdown:
| Spend type | Reward rate | Monthly cap | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible PhonePe spends | 10% reward points | ₹2,000/month | Best category if you use PhonePe for bills, recharge, insurance, travel, hotels, and Pincode. |
| Eligible online spends | 5% reward points | ₹2,000/month | Good for Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Myntra, Nykaa, BookMyShow, MakeMyTrip, Blinkit, Zepto, Rapido, and more. |
| Other spends | 1% reward points | ₹2,000/month | Useful for offline, Scan & Pay, Tap & Pay, and normal spends. |
| Utilities / insurance outside PhonePe | 1% reward points | ₹500/month | Fine, but not the reason to get this card. |
One important detail: rewards are earned as reward points, not direct instant cashback. But PhonePe and SBI mention that 1 reward point = ₹1, redeemable as statement credit or gift vouchers on the SBI Card rewards portal.
That makes the rewards easier to understand than many credit cards where points look big but redemption value is weak.
Still, you should track your monthly category spends. Once you hit the cap, the extra reward does not keep scaling at the same rate.
I track my spends separately because credit card reward calculations can feel more generous than they really are. If you want a simple system, I have shared my monthly spending tracker in Google Sheets.
Where SELECT Black actually shines
Short answer: this card shines when you use PhonePe heavily and also spend online across multiple brands.
For me, the best use cases are:
- PhonePe bill payments – recharges, utilities, insurance, travel, hotels, and Pincode-style spends where eligible.
- Online shopping – Amazon, food delivery, ride apps, fashion, travel, and other eligible online spends.
- UPI and offline spends – especially if you have the RuPay variant linked to UPI.
- Domestic travel – 4 lounge visits per year, capped at 1 per quarter.
- Annual fee waiver – if you naturally cross ₹3 lakh retail spends in a year.
The card is not just for one niche category. That is what makes it interesting.
If your monthly spends are spread across PhonePe, online shopping, and UPI, the SELECT Black structure can work very well.
But if you do not use PhonePe much, the card loses its main advantage.
The real reward math: how much can you actually earn?
Short answer: the theoretical monthly cap is high, but most people will earn less because spending does not fit perfectly into every category.
Let us say you spend like this in a month:
| Monthly spend | Category | Reward estimate |
|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 | PhonePe eligible spends at 10% | ₹1,000 |
| ₹20,000 | Online spends at 5% | ₹1,000 |
| ₹10,000 | Other spends at 1% | ₹100 |
| ₹40,000 | Total monthly spend | ₹2,100 value |
That is strong if your spends are genuine and you are not paying extra convenience fees everywhere.
But here is where you need to be careful.
Some PhonePe transactions may include convenience fees or platform fees depending on payment type, biller, category, and transaction route. So when you calculate cashback, compare the reward against the total cost, not just the headline 10% number.
A 10% reward is excellent. A 10% reward after a 1-2% fee is still good. But the fee should not be invisible in your calculation.
My rule: If I am paying an extra fee to route a transaction through PhonePe, I calculate net benefit after that fee. Headline cashback alone is not enough.
Lounge access and Priority Pass benefits
Short answer: lounge access is a good add-on, but not the only reason to get this card.
The SELECT Black gives 4 domestic lounge visits per year, capped at 1 per quarter. PhonePe’s page also says there is no spend limit to avail the domestic lounge benefit.
That is useful because many cards now put spend conditions on lounge access.
You also get complimentary Priority Pass membership for 2 card membership years, listed as worth ₹8,000 on the official PhonePe page. But remember: Priority Pass membership and actual free international lounge visits are not always the same thing. Always check current SBI/PhonePe lounge terms before travelling.
If lounge access is your main priority, compare this card with a more travel-focused card. But as a cashback-style daily spends card, the lounge benefit is a nice bonus.
PhonePe SBI SELECT Black vs PURPLE
Short answer: choose SELECT Black if you spend enough to use the higher caps. Choose PURPLE only if your spends are light.

| Feature | SELECT Black | PURPLE |
|---|---|---|
| Normal joining / annual fee | ₹1,499 + taxes | ₹499 + taxes |
| Welcome voucher | ₹1,500 if joining fee is paid | ₹500 if joining fee is paid |
| PhonePe spends | 10% reward points | 3% reward points |
| Eligible online spends | 5% reward points | 2% reward points |
| Other spends | 1% reward points | 1% reward points |
| Category caps | Higher monthly caps | Lower monthly caps |
| Domestic lounge | 4 visits/year | Not the main benefit |
| Annual fee waiver | ₹3 lakh spends | ₹1 lakh spends |
| Best for | Moderate to heavy PhonePe/online spenders | Light spenders |
If you can cross ₹3 lakh yearly spends naturally, I would prefer SELECT Black.
If your yearly spend is closer to ₹1 lakh and you do not care about higher reward caps, PURPLE is easier to justify.
But I would not pick PURPLE just to save the annual fee if my spends can easily recover the SELECT Black fee through rewards.
Who should get the PhonePe SBI SELECT Black card?
Short answer: get it if PhonePe and online spends are already a big part of your monthly payments.
This card makes sense if:
- You use PhonePe for bills, recharge, insurance, travel, hotels, or Pincode spends.
- You spend regularly on Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Myntra, Blinkit, Zepto, and similar online platforms.
- You want a RuPay card for UPI credit card payments.
- You can naturally cross ₹3 lakh yearly spends for fee waiver.
- You want simple reward value where 1 reward point = ₹1.
- You will pay the full bill every month.
This card does not make sense if:
- You barely use PhonePe.
- You mostly spend offline where the reward is only 1%.
- Your monthly spends are too low to justify SELECT Black over PURPLE.
- You will spend extra just to chase the ₹3 lakh fee waiver.
- You often carry unpaid credit card balances.
If you want a very premium card with travel/dining/lifestyle value, this is not in the same category as something like the ICICI Emeralde Private Metal Credit Card. PhonePe SBI SELECT Black is more of a practical digital-spends cashback card.
My honest verdict: is it worth it in 2026?
Short answer: yes, if you use PhonePe and online spends enough to hit meaningful rewards without forcing spends.
I like this card because the rewards are easy to understand. 10%, 5%, and 1% are clear. 1 reward point = ₹1 is also clear. That simplicity matters.
The best part is that the card fits normal Indian spending habits: UPI, bills, recharges, food delivery, online shopping, cab rides, and occasional travel.
The biggest caution is that it is not automatically a 10% cashback card on everything. The 10% category is for eligible PhonePe spends, and caps apply. Online spends get 5%. Other spends get 1%.
So my verdict is simple:
- Heavy PhonePe user: SELECT Black is worth considering.
- Moderate online spender: Still useful if the 5% category fits your brands.
- Light spender: PURPLE may be enough.
- Travel-first user: Look at travel-focused cards instead.
- Cashback-only user: Compare it with SBI Cashback Card before deciding.
For my use case, SELECT Black is the more interesting card than PURPLE.
But I will keep checking the monthly reward posting and net value after convenience fees. That is where the real review happens.
Quick FAQ
Is PhonePe SBI SELECT Black First Year Free right now?
SBI has a First Year Free offer for eligible new applications from April 3, 2026 to June 2, 2026. Under this offer, the first-year fee is waived, but the ₹1,500 welcome gift card is not available.
What is the annual fee of PhonePe SBI SELECT Black?
The normal joining and annual fee is ₹1,499 + applicable taxes. Renewal fee can be reversed on ₹3 lakh annual retail spends in the previous year, as per current PhonePe/SBI terms.
Does the card really give 10% cashback?
It gives 10% reward points on eligible PhonePe spends, subject to monthly caps and terms. It is not 10% on every transaction. Online spends get 5%, and other spends get 1%.
Can I redeem reward points as cash?
Yes. PhonePe mentions that 1 reward point = ₹1 and can be redeemed as statement credit or gift vouchers on the SBI Card Rewards portal.
Is RuPay or Visa better for this card?
If UPI credit card payments matter to you, RuPay is more useful because it can be linked with UPI apps. If your focus is broader card acceptance, Visa may feel more familiar. Pick based on how you actually pay.
Is SELECT Black better than PURPLE?
SELECT Black is better if you spend enough to use the higher reward rates and caps. PURPLE is better for light spenders who want a lower fee and do not need SELECT Black-level caps.
Summing Up!
The PhonePe SBI SELECT Black Credit Card is one of the more practical cards for people who already live inside PhonePe, UPI, and online shopping apps. The reward structure is simple, the caps are useful, and the ₹3 lakh waiver threshold is achievable for many regular spenders.
But do not read only the 10% headline. Check the category, monthly cap, convenience fee, and whether your application falls under the First Year Free offer. If the joining fee is waived, the welcome voucher is not available under the current SBI offer T&C.
My recommendation is clear: choose SELECT Black if you use PhonePe and online spends heavily. Choose PURPLE if your spends are light. Skip both if you will not pay the full bill every month.
